Mak n Ming, which opened in 2017, is co-owned by Chef Makoto Ono (“Mak”) and culinary/life partner pastry chef Amanda Cheng (“Ming”). Makoto’s signature tasting menus seamlessly blend his Japanese heritage with his love for French cookery by creating approachable yet inventive contemporary West Coast cuisine. Amanda’s innovative bread and dessert creations are designed to please both eye and palette while perfectly flowing with the menu progression. Dishes are inspired by the changing variety of available produce and protein throughout the year.
In direct comparison, the only other more collaborative chef than Makoto and Amanda might be Mandel Hitzer of Deer + Almond in Winnipeg, who drives the annual RAW: almond pop-up dinners (they sell out INSTANTLY). Featuring a brigade of chefs from Winnipeg and across Canada, this dinner series is set in a uniquely designed restaurant on solid ice at The Forks, where Winnipeg’s Red and Assiniboine rivers meet just outside downtown.
Hitzer is proud that he is putting Canada on the international foodie map with his culinary endeavours. “This is a city that I’ve always really believed in”, Hitzer shared. From accolades in Conde Nast Traveller, and the New York Times twice, things are going to start heating up in Winterpeg with the help of Hitzer, and we can’t wait to get a taste this year.
